To the parents, caregivers, and community members of the Milton-Union Schools:
After several trips around the Milton-Union attendance area and seeing the extent of weather-related damage experienced by our students, families, staff members, and community members, the Milton-Union Schools will cancel the final student instructional day on Thursday, May 30, 2019.
Although made considerably better by the coordinated efforts of so many volunteers, several roads still remain unpassable for the district’s bus traffic due to debris, hanging and fallen power lines, closures, etc. These conditions affect several bus routes, and based on district estimates, impacts over one-third of students who routinely ride district-provided transportation.
To allow an opportunity for closure, our school buildings will be open with teachers and staff members available to students and families in their classrooms on Thursday, May 30 and Friday, May 31 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Our staff members would like to offer this opportunity for students and teachers to connect once more before summer begins. (For those students requiring transportation and especially for our elementary kids, parents and caregivers should plan to stop by as well.) During this time, students may turn in any final projects or assignments, return textbooks and/or school-provided technology, clean out lockers and desks, and collect any other personal belongings. At their convenience, students, parents, and caregivers may visit buildings at any time between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. If you have questions or specific needs, please contact the buildings and speak with one of the main office secretaries who will collect this information and communicate with the appropriate staff member.
High School – (937) 884-7940
Middle School – (937) 884-7930
Elementary School – (937) 884-7920
The following are a few additional building-specific notes to help proactively address questions.
Milton-Union High School – Teaching and administrative staff members will create a workable plan to calculate semester and final grades in the absence of second semester exams. Semester exams will not be administered. Semester and final grades will be based on work that has already been submitted and assessed.
Milton-Union Middle School – After much discussion about scheduling options, 8th Grade Promotion has been canceled. Our 8th grade students will have several future opportunities for us to celebrate them and their many accomplishments. We are sad, but we also recognize the larger picture. We reached this decision after considerable discussion and out of deep respect for those in our community who are hurting.
Milton-Union Elementary School – Kindergarten screening will continue as scheduled. We intend to work with new students and families who need rescheduled from earlier in the week. If you are a parent/caregiver affected by the storms, we understand you have other priorities right now, and our teachers, office staff members, and administrators will work with you to reschedule.
As a school district and in good conscience, we do not want to be a distraction for any students, families, caregivers, and community members dramatically affected by weather-related events. We take the circumstances affecting our community very seriously, and we do not want to add any additional stressors for those already dealing with complete losses of residences, belongings, valuables, etc.
After much discussion and following an event that no one could control, the best possible response our school system can make is to provide the time necessary for students, families, and community members to recover and better assess their present circumstances. Providing our kids with the time needed for them to make an impact on others at an unprecedented time supports their “learning” in so many meaningful ways.
Please understand this is a fluid situation, and the district will provide updates and respond to questions and concerns as needed. As always, thank you for your continued support of Milton-Union Schools.
